‘Seven Guitars’ at Signature Theatre hits all the right chords to resonate with audiences

Without being showy, the transition packs a punch. About halfway through No Rules Theatre Company’s absorbing production of August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars,” a rapt attentiveness descends on an urban backyard. It is 1948 and a small crowd of Pittsburgh residents has gathered to hear the radio broadcast of Joe Louis’s latest boxing match. As the announcer speaks, the scene encompasses both overall stillness and bits of fidgety movement, testifying to the way individual experience courses raggedly on through unifying collective moments. Then Joe Louis lands a knockout blow — and the yard erupts in idiosyncratic jubilation, with people hugging, jumping and doing goofy jigs of glee.
