The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra was founded in Bach’s home city, and its charter members were musicians often in his employ. The orchestra premiered Beethoven’s “Emperor Concerto” and presented the first cycle of all nine symphonies, during his lifetime. With this pedigree, the orchestra’s renditions of the core 19th-century German canon have carried enormous cachet down to the present day, and its concert Wednesday at the Kennedy Center was one of the season’s signal events.
