Bill “Magic” Lavender-Bey knows all about the low end. Lavender-Bey plays the bass, the foundation instrument of jazz. It anchors the groove, frees up the other musicians to both articulate the melody and stray from it during solos. The bassist is the branch manager of the music — dispensing the helpful notes, keeping everyone on time and focused on the job at hand. But what happens when the bassist’s foundation outside the music is unsteady? Lavender-Bey, 58, has been a professional musician all his adult life, though these days, being a full-time jazz musician in Washington is research material for the blues. America’s capital is woefully short on clubs dedicated to America’s music. Too few places to play, too many instruments kept in their cases at night.
