Organist Jeremy Filsell’s clever profile of 20th-century pieces at the Kennedy Center

For lovers of expressive organ playing, this October in Washington has been a gold mine. Hot on the heels of Paul Jacobs’s stunning performances with the National Symphony Orchestra earlier this month, Jeremy Filsell inaugurated this season’s Rubenstein Family Organ Recital Series at the Kennedy Center Wednesday night. Filsell, who directs the music at Church of the Epiphany, teaches at Catholic University, and is Artist-in-Residence at National Cathedral, played 20th-century music showcasing the organ’s rich resources of color and texture. But his unusual program, striking for its intellectual rigor and depth of imagination, also created an aural portrait of the past century that was provocative, unsettling and profoundly moving.
